The three-day SRO Tactical Assailant Response (S.T.A.R.) course prepares school resource officers to respond alone to active threats on school property. Through tactical training, decision-making exercises, and force-on-force scenarios, officers practice navigating school environments, assessing threats, de-escalating when appropriate, isolating threats, and using precise force near bystanders. Completion requires meeting Critical Task Evaluation standards.
Description
The SRO Tactical Assailant Response (S.T.A.R.) course is designed to equip SROs with the essential solo skills needed to respond to active threats on school property. This intensive three-day course combines tactical training, decision-making, and force-on-force exercises to ensure officers are thoroughly prepared for school-related threats. The course highlights the significance of use-of-force decision-making, including de-escalation strategies and the appropriate application of force in dynamic, complex environments.
Participants will learn to navigate various environments within a school setting, including open areas with vehicles, crowded spaces, hallways, stairwells, rooms, and the crucial transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The training prepares officers to handle a range of threats, from individuals who may be dangerous but are not visibly armed to armed suspects who are willing to surrender, as well as those who pose an immediate danger to others. Officers will also gain proficiency in threat isolation and precision engagement techniques, particularly when responding near innocent bystanders or close to potential victims. To complete the course, officers must meet Critical Task Evaluation standards.
